What are the prerequisites and requirements for admissions?

If you’re exploring how to start flight training, a high school diploma or GED is required for admission to American Winds. Students must also be at least 16 years old to officially train to become a pilot, but flight school programs are available for younger students.

What is the uniform policy or dress code?

The FAA written exam, also known as the FAA Knowledge Test, is valid for 24 calendar months from the date you pass it. To ensure your training stays on track, plan your stages of flight training within this timeframe, including completing the practical test.

What should I expect from a typical flight training day?

In addition to ground school lessons where you’ll study concepts from aviation training books, flight training at American Winds is where you’ll get hands-on flight practice. During a typical flight training day, one of our Certified Flight Instructors will guide you through the maneuvers and skills you need to manage takeoffs, landings, emergency situations and more. As your proficiency builds, you will have the opportunity to take longer flights, solo flights and nighttime flights.

How do I become a commercial pilot?

Becoming a commercial pilot requires the completion of specialized training programs that align with your career goals, whether embarking on a new career or transitioning from another piloting background. At American Winds, we offer a range of commercial pilot license programs including our Professional Pilot Program, Commercial Pilot Program, Rotary Transition Program, and Instructor Pilot Program, as well as a Commercial Pilot Fast Track Program which allows you to become a commercial pilot in as little as 10-12 months. These programs provide the skills, certifications, and experience to start your journey toward a successful aviation career.

How do I get my private pilot's license?

Earn your FAA-issued Private Pilot Certificate in as little as six weeks by enrolling in our Private Pilot’s License Program at American Winds, where you’ll learn essential skills in the classroom and the cockpit. American Winds is an FAA-approved testing center for all aviation PSI exams, including the PSI private pilot exam, a written test that covers aviation theory, regulations, and flight operations. After passing the exam, an oral test and a check ride, you’ll log the required flight hours to obtain your Private Pilot’s Certificate. Your flight training experience with a Certified Flight Instructor will prepare you to confidently take to the skies for recreation.

The state of Ohio has also approved American Winds to administer VA benefits for flight training courses above the Private Pilot License level.
