What is the FAA PSI Written Exam?
The FAA PSI Written Exam refers to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) knowledge tests that are administered by PSI Services. These exams are required for various aviation certifications, including but not limited to:
- Private Pilot License (PPL)
- Commercial Pilot License (CPL)
- Airline Transport Pilot (ATP)
- Instrument Rating (IR)
These FAA written exams demonstrate the student’s level of competency in a multitude of aviation subjects, varying in the allotted time and question length according to FAA guidelines. These are computer-based, multiple-choice exams that cover material such as FAA regulations, aerodynamics and flight principles, weather and meteorology, airspace and navigation, safety procedures and more.
Why Schedule Your PSI Exam With American Winds
The FAA has delegated its testing services to an outside contractor known as PSI Services, which certifies physical testing centers across the country. Under the guidelines of the FAA, knowledge exams may only be given through certified testing centers, and American Winds is one of those approved testing centers! We offer 11 aviation exams and even five non-aviation PPI exams. American Winds is easily accessible and open Monday through Friday, 10 am to 4 pm. Our team also provides everything you need for your exam, so you don’t have to worry about forgetting any important materials on your test day!

How to Schedule Your PSI Exam
PSI FAA exam scheduling is an important step in the process of becoming a pilot, so make sure you don’t miss a step! While American Winds is an FAA approved testing center for written exams, we cannot directly schedule FAA exams for you. Instead, you can:
- Call the PSI technical support number: 1-844-704-1487
- Visit the PSI website where you can create an account with your FAA Tracking Number. This is where you will verify your eligibility, schedule FAA exams, pay fees and receive test confirmation.
What to Do on Exam Day
It’s finally exam day! You’ve prepared for and scheduled your test, and you’re probably feeling a mixture of nerves and excitement. Below are a few things to keep in mind before heading to your testing site.
Arrive Early
It seems simple, but one of the best things you can do is arrive at least 15 minutes early. This means you’re walking into your testing room 15 minutes before your exam begins. If you’ve never visited the testing site before, you should give yourself more time to find the building, park, and locate the correct room for your test.
Everyone intends to arrive at an exam early, but it doesn’t always go that way. The night before your test, make a plan for what time you will leave, check if you need gas for your car, and gather anything you want to bring with you.
Bring Your Valid ID
Bring your valid, current ID that includes your photo, date of birth, signature and address. The information on your photo ID must match what you have registered with the FAA. The FAA Knowledge Testing Matrix provides complete information about acceptable forms of ID (including for non-U.S. citizens), reference material links and more.
The American Winds team will provide you with everything else you need for the exam, including:
- 2 pencils
- 2 pieces of scratch paper
- 1 FAA supplement book
- 1 plastic overlay (to use in supplement books to prevent students from writing in the book!)
- 1 dry-erase marker
- 1 non-programmable calculator
- Earplugs
- Magnifying glass (if requested)
Please DO NOT bring any personal writing instruments, portable phones, electronic planners, or any type of device with text or video recording capabilities. These items are not permitted in the testing room during test administration.
PSI test centers provide secure, lockable storage in which personal items can be placed. Electronic items must be powered off before being placed in storage. If the personal items do not fit into the provided storage (such as a large handbag), you will be asked to return them to your vehicle if applicable.
Take Your Exam
Take a deep breath and begin your exam. You’ve prepared for this and we know you’re ready to get one step closer to your dream of being a pilot. Take your time for each question and remember not to communicate with any other test takers.
Most FAA PSI exams require a minimum score of 70 to pass. If you achieve a score of 70 or higher, you’ve demonstrated sufficient knowledge of the test topic to continue your flight training. This includes logging flight time until your Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) determines you’re ready to take the practical exam, also known as a check ride, with a Designated Flight Examiner.
If you receive a score of below 70, don’t give up! After a 30-day waiting period, you can retake the exam. We encourage you to try again. Some people struggle with exams, but that doesn’t mean you should stop trying!
